Watercolour 11" x  15"

This is a painting portrait of a woman and a robin redbreast created in watercolour. Watercolour is a notoriously hard medium to use. Once you put marks on the paper with brush and paint you can't remove it. If you try and overwork watercolour it becomes muddy and dull very quickly. It is a medium which is delicate and light. It has to remain delicate and light as each layer is transparent and has a mind of its own. It is a temperamental paint medium. This is the reason that I like to experiment with techniques and subjects in watercolour. It forces me to think about every brush mark which I am making. It really makes me study the face of a subject before I start painting. This portrait was a study experiment. I wanted to make the woman in the portrait really elegant and beautiful and have her purposely close the bird in the painting. I am always playing with the relationship between human and animals in my artwork. I was also having an experiment with colours and mark making. It is a bright and an energetic piece and I wanted to make the viewer happy when they looked at the painting. I hope the energy translates into the piece.
