Polo's origin can be traced back to Persia with as many horses as 100 on one side. Polo in the modern world first came from India, the first polo club in India was opened in Assam in 1833. Today polo is big in places such as Argentina, The United States, Britain, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, and Dubai. In London, we have three main polo clubs which are Hurlingham, Ranelagh, and Roehampton and the governing body for polo in the UK is the Hurlingham Polo Association. It is a ball game played on horseback between two teams of 4 players on each team. All the polo riders have long-handled mallets to hit a ball down the field to score a goal.  This was my first painting of a polo player and horse. I always do my initial sketches and experimentation first in watercolor before moving into oil. I find watercolor a perfect medium for sketching as you have to be careful with your brushstrokes as once you put the paint down on the paper you can't just paint over it. Every mark counts in watercolor and this really forces me to think about the subject that I am painting.  I really wanted to create the polo player elegant and light as he is riding across the field. I was really happy with the outcome of this first initial painting and loved how the horses head turned out. I hope this will be the first of many polo paintings.
