Pencil and Acrylic Portrait of a Staffordshire Bull Terrier
I was recently commissioned to create a portrait of Sydney a much loved Staffordshire Bull terrier. The brief was to create a pencil sketch with a green circle behind her to be framed as a piece of artwork.
I was sent over a few images of Sydney for reference so I could get a good feel for her personality and what I needed to capture. She's such a beautiful dog and I wanted to make her statuesque and regal.
I set to work, once I have done a loose pencil sketch of the overall shape I sent her to the owner to approve. Once she approved it I set to work on shading all the detail in. The shading takes me about a day to complete. Once that was complete I sent over some colour samples for the circle to be approved. She liked the green.
I painted Sydney with the green circle behind her. The owner was over the moon with the end result and she is now hanging happily on a wall in Brighton.

You can imagine how excited I was when this lovely commission came in. It was to paint a beautiful Arabian horse, oil on canvas.
This was such a lovely job to do. Obviously, as I am a whippet owner myself I am hugely biased to whippets being the most beautiful dog and I am always excited when I get one to draw.
Given all of the above, the idea of commissioning a dog portrait might seem downright difficult. This is where artist Caroline Towning comes in.
Known for his icon imagery of flags, targets, maps and light bulbs, Jasper Johns is an American artist born in 1930. This exhibition has over 150 paintings and is the biggest one in the UK for 40 years.
There is a bronze fountain in Piccadilly Circle in the heart of London. It was made by artist Rudy Weller and erected in 1992. This is one of my favorite sculpture of all time.
I have been wanting to create a personalised art gift set for quite some time as I get asked to paint a lot of dog portraits and I thought that it would be lovely if I could find a way to paint something which is then presented and turned into a lovely gift set.
